Benefits of juicing

Juicing and is it for me? We are regularly bombarded with mixed messages about fruit juice and smoothies; on the one hand, we are told that we can fulfil the five-a-day fruit and vegetable requirement in just one drink and, on the other hand, we hear that certain smoothies and juices have a ridiculous amount of sugar in them. Research has led me to find that fresh fruit juice can contain a variety of vitamins and nutrients that benefit our health. However, fruit juice should not be a substitute for whole fruit and should be consumed in moderation, as part of a balanced diet. That’s because even natural juices and smoothies, that have zero added sugar, don’t have the same benefits as whole fruits. Fresh orange juice has more calories than sugary sodas. The sugars found in fruits are contained within their structure but this sugar is released when the fruit is blended and quickly absorbed by the body, therefore, if consumed regularly, you could damage your teeth. This may seem contradictory to the point of this post, however, it is important to put things into perspective. Remember that part of the hype surrounding the negative portrayal of fruit juice stems from anger over its misleading claim to healthiness. In reality, the extent to which fruit juice is healthy can depend upon your health and fitness goals. If your goal is weight loss then the sugar and calorie content in fruit juice is not ideal. However, if your goal is to improve your health and diet by boosting the amount of nutrients and vitamins you consume, then home-made or natural juice can be extremely beneficial. Plus, if you do not usually eat certain fruits and vegetables, juicing can be a great way to incorporate them into your diet. So it makes sense then to consider juicing as a healthy way of kick-starting a healthier approach to food. Not a cleanse or a quick weight loss fix but a catalyst to starting a healthier lifestyle.
